Castle Butte rises above Good Hope Bay and the wide mouth of Red Canyon. It is about 770 feet (234.7 meters) above Lake PowellΓÇÖs full pool and is a prominent landmark. Both gold and uranium mining operations occurred near the butte. River man Bert Loper built his ΓÇ£HermitageΓÇ¥ near the mouth of Red Canyon. There were also many Anasazi ruins in the Red Canyon area.
